Short version: if you blend most days and it does not have to sit under a cabinet, I'd pick the Vitamix 5200 for its 7 year warranty, tamper and narrow jar. If it must fit an 18 inch gap, the Vitamix Propel 750 is the Vitamix that does, with no room to spare. For frozen drinks for a crowd, the Ninja Professional Plus BN701 does the job with a 1 year warranty. For a cup some days and a pitcher on others, look at the nutribullet Blender Combo.

Vitamix's own buying guide explains the gap. It says some makers list peak horsepower, the burst a motor needs to get through resistance, and others list running horsepower, the power used in normal operation. Hot liquids: Vitamix's own guide says to let hot liquids cool for 3 to 5 minutes before they go in a blender, and warns that spray or escaping steam can burn and that pressure can build under a lid that is not vented. Only blend hot food in a jar whose maker says it is made for it, with the vented lid on. Never in a sealed cup.

Get this if you blend most days, want the longest warranty here, and make everything from one smoothie to a full jar. Skip it if it has to live under an upper cabinet. The listing gives 20.5 inches with the jar, and a common cabinet gap is 18. The title area says 2 HP, which works out to 1,492 watts. The spec table says 1,380 watts, and Vitamix's own page gives 11.5 amps at 120 volts, which is also 1,380.
