Jar size is not batch size

The ounces in a blender title are the total space inside the jar. The most you can blend at once is a separate number, and it can be much smaller. At the other end, a wide jar needs enough food in it to cover the blades, so a tiny batch may just spin.

Title ounces vs the fill line

• Blendtec Total Blender Classic: the title says 75oz with an asterisk. The first bullet says 75 oz total capacity and 32 oz blending capacity. Blendtec's own FourSide jar page agrees: max liquid fill up to 32 oz. That is 43 percent of the title number, or two 16 oz servings.
• Ninja Professional Plus BN701: a 72 oz pitcher, and the listing says the max liquid capacity is 64 oz.
• The other five listings give one capacity figure. Check the markings on the jar when it arrives and stay under the top line, more so with hot food.

Too little is a problem too

Vitamix sells several jar shapes and describes them by batch size. Its container guide says the 48 oz container's narrower design handles about 1 to 4 servings. Its low-profile 64 oz container page says that jar is designed to process large batches, and lists a 4 inch blade. The Vitamix 5200 page lists a 3 inch blade in the tall classic jar. A wider base spreads a small batch thin, so less of it reaches the blades.

That shows up in the listings. The Vitamix 5200 listing says its container allows small to large blends. The Vitamix Propel 750 listing talks about large blends. If you usually make one smoothie, pick a narrow jar or a blender with cups, like the nutribullet Blender Combo with its 32 oz and 24 oz cups.

When food gets stuck

Ninja's FAQ for the BN700 series says that if ingredients stick to the sides of the pitcher, scrape the sides and add more liquid if needed. That is the no tamper fix: stop, unplug, scrape, add liquid. With a tamper you can push food down through the lid while it runs. See the tamper guide.
